FEMALE FOCUSED NON-PROFITS

Whether you are seeking support or would like to donate to a female-friendly cause, here are the non-profits that are changing the lives of women around the world.

EQUALITY

WOMANKIND WORLDWIDE

Womankind Worldwide is a global women’s rights organisation working in solidarity and equal partnership with women’s rights organisations and movements to transform the lives of women.

Our vision is of a just world where the rights of all women are respected, valued and realised.

We work to support and strengthen women’s movements to change the world for women. Our small team is based in the UK and we work in partnership with women’s rights organisations and movements primarily in Africa and Asia. Our current focus countries are Ethiopia, Kenya, NepalUganda and Zimbabwe

We also advocate for governments and international agencies to protect and promote women’s rights through our policy and campaigns work.

FAWCETT SOCIETY

The Fawcett Society is the UK’s leading membership charity campaigning for gender equality and women’s rights at work, at home and in public life. Our vision is a society in which women and girls in all their diversity are equal and truly free to fulfill their potential creating a stronger, happier, better future for us all.

We’ve been advancing women’s equality since 1866 when at just 19, Millicent Fawcett collected signatures on a petition for women’s votes. She went on to lead the constitutional suffrage campaign and made this cause her lifetime’s work, securing equal voting rights 62 years later.

Today we continue her legacy of fighting sexism and gender inequality through hard-hitting research. Our national campaigns shape the debate and drive change – and they are only made possible through the support of our members. Be part of our movement for equality. Join us now.

ROSA

Rosa is a grantmaking charity that funds grassroots women’s organisations to help to make the UK a fairer, safer place for women. We root our support in the organisations working closely with women and girls. They’re the ones campaigning to secure equal power for women in politics and public life, and ensuring more women live free from violence. They’re advocating for better healthcare for women and girls, and pushing for economic stability.

YOUNG WOMEN’S TRUST

Young Women’s Trust is a feminist organisation working to achieve economic justice for young women.

Our vision is one where young women have the freedom to choose work that fosters their talents and are paid fair wages in secure workplaces. And society prospers because young women’s contribution is valued.

Our mission is to give economic power to young women by firing their imaginations and aspirations and raising their voices, by challenging sexist work roles that trap young women in poverty and rebuilding work places free from discrimination and inequality.

CARE INTERNATIONAL

CARE International works around the globe to save lives, defeat poverty and achieve social justice. We put women and girls in the centre because we know that we cannot overcome poverty until all people have equal rights and opportunities.

In spite of global progress in reducing absolute poverty, wide inequalities persist between and within countries, and between men and women. Working for poverty reduction and social justice: The CARE 2020 Program Strategy sets out a vision for how CARE globally will fight inequality in order to overcome the injustice of poverty. For a world of justice, without poverty sets out what CARE in the UK will do to help make this happen.

ACTIONAID UK

ActionAid is an international charity that works with women and girls living in poverty.

Our dedicated local staff are changing the world with women and girls. We are ending violence and fighting poverty so that all women, everywhere, can create the future they want.

Our vision – A just, equitable and sustainable world in which every person enjoys the right to a life of dignity, freedom from poverty and all forms of oppression.

Our mission – to achieve social justice, gender equality, and poverty eradication by working with people living in poverty and exclusion, their communities, people’s organisations, activists, social movements and supporters.

THE FEMALE LEAD

We reveal the factors that limit women’s choices and fulfilment and amplify their voices in order to drive real change and improve economic outcomes.

We do this in four ways:

  1. Listening – By listening to women through qualitative and quantitative research into their lives
  2. Sharing – By sharing women’s stories in our books, videos, podcasts, schools programme and articles
  3. Revealing – Measuring millions of social media users globally to explore the connections and passions of women across the UK
  4. Influencing – From our research we make recommendations to government and businesses to affect positive change

VIOLENCE against women

WOMEN’S AID

Women’s Aid is the national charity working to end domestic abuse against women and children.

We have been at the forefront of shaping and coordinating responses to domestic violence and abuse through practice for over 45 years. We empower survivors by keeping their voices at the heart of our work, working with and for women and children by listening to them and responding to their needs.

Women’s Aid was founded on women’s struggle against patriarchy, sexism and male violence and grew out of the Women’s movement in the 70’s and 80’s. Today we take an intersectional approach to our work to end domestic abuse and stand with other feminist organisations leading the way in eradicating Violence Against Women and Girls.

CENTRE FOR WOMEN’S JUSTICE

The Centre for Women’s Justice is a new charity, founded in 2016. We aim to bring together specialist lawyers, academics and other experts in the field of violence against women, with those working on the frontline as activists, survivors and service providers to bring strategic law challenges and ensure access to justice for victims of male violence.

WOMEN FOR WOMEN

During 1992-1995, an estimated 50,000 Bosnian women were subjected to rape as a weapon of war. Thousands more witnessed the killing of loved ones and destruction of their homes, and were left struggling to provide and care for their families whilst dealing with severe trauma.

Women for Women International created ‘sister-to-sister’ connections between isolated women in Bosnia and individual ‘sponsor sisters’ around the world.

We have gone on to support over half a million women across 8 conflict-affected countries to overcome the horrors of war and work towards a better future for themselves and their families.

RIGHTS OF WOMEN

We are a women’s charity working in a number of ways to help women through the law.

Every day women contact us because they are unclear or confused about how the law can help them: a woman who has been assaulted by her partner; a woman who has been raped; a woman who has fled her country because of violence; a woman who fears her children will be taken from her; a woman whose immigration status is insecure; a woman who has separated from her husband.

Our vital services aim to provide women with the legal advice and information they need to understand and use the law and their legal rights. We also work to improve the law for women and increase women’s access to justice.

WOMEN FOR REFUGEE WOMEN

We support and empower women who have come to the UK seeking refuge from persecution. Many have experienced rape, sexual violence or other torture. When women arrive in the UK seeking safety, too often they instead face disbelief, detention and destitution. We enable women to learn English and develop their skills and confidence. We also support women to tell their own stories and advocate for a fairer asylum process.

We work in the belief that every woman who crosses borders in search of safety deserves a fair hearing and a chance to rebuild her life.

TRAFFICKING & HONOUR BASED VIOLENCE

SAVERA UK

We are Savera UK and we are speaking out.

We campaign to eliminate ‘honour’-based abuse and harmful practices and provide life-saving services to those at risk, regardless of age, culture, sexuality or gender.

Established in 2010, we are a leading charity tackling culturally-specific abuse in the UK, including forced marriage and female genital mutilation. We advocate for those who need a voice and offer a completely confidential and non-judgemental service.

IMKAAN

Imkaan is a UK-based, Black feminist organisation. We are the only national second-tier women’s organisation dedicated to addressing violence against Black and minoritised women and girls i.e. women and girls which are defined in policy terms as Black and ‘Minority Ethnic’ (BME).

The organisation holds nearly two decades of experience of working around issues such as domestic violence, forced marriage and ‘honour-based’ violence. We work at local, national and international level, and in partnership with a range of organisations, to improve policy and practice responses to Black and minoritised women and girls.

HELEN BAMBER FOUNDATION

The Helen Bamber Foundation (HBF) is a human rights charity based in London which was founded by Helen Bamber in 2005. Our specialist team of therapists, doctors and legal experts hold an international reputation for providing therapeutic care, medical consultation, legal protection and practical support to survivors of human rights violations.

HBF grew from the recognition that people who have suffered any kind of prolonged inter-personal violence – whether from human trafficking; war; community, domestic or gender-based violence – present with similar physical and psychological symptoms to torture survivors. The Foundation extends the model of care that Helen has developed over decades for people who suffered state torture to include a wider range of survivors who had previously lacked such specialist support.

HOMELESSNESS & employment support

HOUSING FOR WOMEN

Housing for Women champions female empowerment by providing and promoting affordable homes for women and gender-specific support services.

Since 1934, we have been working to build a more equal society for women, a world where everyone has a safe roof over their head regardless of circumstance, where violence against women is no longer tolerated. Our organisation’s roots go back to the suffragette movement. Housing for Women carries on in the footsteps of these early women’s rights campaigners, working with some of the most marginalised groups in the UK, such as trafficked womenwomen leaving prison and older women at risk of loneliness and isolation. Empowering women and challenging inequality are at the core of everything we do.

SMART WORKS

Smart Works is a UK charity that provides high quality interview clothes and interview training to unemployed women in need. We harness the power of clothes and confidence to allow a woman to be her best at a crucial moment in her life, giving her the confidence, the self-belief and the practical tools required to succeed at interview and transform her life.

The tangible impact that our service has on a woman’s confidence is something we have the privilege to witness every day.  The magic begins when she enters the dressing room and is styled into her interview outfit, hers to keep, by trained volunteers. She looks in the mirror and sees a new and impressive version of herself. This is followed by one-to-one interview coaching, after which 64% of our clients go on to get the job.

CHILDREN & YOUNG WOMEN

THE GIRLS’ NETWORK

Our mission is to inspire and empower girls from the least advantaged communities by connecting them with a mentor and a network of professional female role models.

We believe that no girls should have their futures limited by their gender, background, or parental income. We believe that all girls should be supported to realise their ambitions, to discover their self-worth, and to develop their capacity to shape their world and their future.

PLAN INTERNATIONAL

Plan International UK is a children’s charity. We strive to advance children’s rights and equality for girls all over the world.

We recognise the power and potential of every single child. But this is often suppressed by poverty, violence, exclusion and discrimination. And it’s girls who are most affected. Our Because I am a Girl campaign is a global movement that’s taking action to see a world that values girls, promotes their rights and ends injustice.

We encourage and help children take an active role in finding solutions to their problems and realising their rights and their full potential.

GIRLS OUT LOUD

At Girls Out Loud we believe girls are under represented in senior management roles across all sectors and know that if we are to effect change any time soon, along with organisational shifts we need to inspire and motivate the next generation to pick up the baton.

It may surprise you to know that not all girls have aspirations. Even after 100 years of liberation and continued campaigning for equality, not all girls want careers or even believe they are capable of making this happen; not all girls think it is possible to have a career and a family and very few girls know the extent of opportunities out there waiting for them to put their hand up and say YES!

It is our job to educate, inform and inspire them to step up, believe in themselves and walk tall with confidence, self-respect and purpose.

MALALA FUND

Malala and Ziauddin Yousafzai founded Malala Fund in 2013 to champion every girl’s right to 12 years of free, safe, quality education.

Together our boardleadership councilstaff and champions are creating a more equal world by making sure all girls can go to school.

Malala Fund works in regions where the most girls
miss out on secondary education. Our priority countries are Afghanistan, Brazil, India, Lebanon, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.

WOMEN SUPPORTING WOMEN

Women Supporting Women is a passionate group who are committed to changing the lives of young women at The Prince’s Trust, helping them gain the skills needed to live, learn and earn.

The mission of Women Supporting Women is simple: to provide the right help to nurture, empower and inspire young women to build their own futures through employment, self-employment, education or training.

WOMEN’S HEALTH

MARIE STOPES UK

Marie Stopes UK is a charity that has been helping women and men across the UK to choose if and when they have children for 40 years. We’re proud to be one of the UK’s largest providers of abortion services, but what really matters to us is the individual care and attention we give to every women who comes to us.

They’re all committed to giving the advice, support and care that’s right for you and they’ll always do it without any judgement. It’s what we’ve been doing for more than 40 years.

BLOODY GOOD PERIOD

Sadly, the reality is that they’re a luxury that many refugees and asylum seekers living in the UK cannot afford. Many people living in poverty resort to using toilet paper, old scraps of fabric or nothing at all.

Bloody Good Period was started by Gabby Edlin, who decided something needed to be done to create a sustainable flow (pun intended) of menstrual products for those who can’t afford to buy them. What started as a whip-round on Facebook is now a growing charity, with a vision to achieve menstrual equity – where the simple fact of bleeding doesn’t stop anyone from participating fully in society, or life.

We are now partnered with 40 asylum seeker drop-in centres around the country, helping more women and people who menstruate have bloody good periods.

WISH | A VOICE FOR WOMEN’S MENTAL HEALTH

Established in 1987, Wish is the only national, user-led charity working with women with mental health needs in prison, hospital and the community. It provides independent advocacy, emotional support and practical guidance at all stages of a woman’s journey through the Mental Health and Criminal Justice Systems.

Wish acts to increase women’s participation in the services they receive, and campaigns to get their voice heard at a policy level. It is unique in its long-term commitment to each individual, as they move through hospitals, prison and the community.

MOTHERS 2 MOTHERS

We are a diverse international team working towards 1 goal – ending AIDS and creating bright futures for women and families across sub-Saharan Africa.

We employ women living with HIV as Community Health Workers called Mentor Mothers and work both at health facilities and door-to-door to improve the health of communities across ten African nations.

FEMALE SPORT

WOMEN IN SPORT

The charity Women in Sport was founded in 1984, with the goal of giving every woman and girl in the UK the opportunity to experience the transformational rewards of sport.

Our mission – Women and girls are missing out on the lifelong benefits of sport. We want to change this, now for every woman and girl in the UK.

Our vision – A society where women and men have equal opportunities.

How we do it – We are the only organisation in the UK that researches sport purely from the perspective of women and girls. We use the insight gained to drive change through campaigns and partnerships.

WOMEN’S SPORT TRUST

Founded in 2012, Women’s Sport Trust raises the visibility and increases the impact of women’s sport through the promotion of diverse athlete role models, increasing media coverage and improving the funding landscape. We are a leading UK charity focused on using the power of sport to accelerate gender equality and stimulate social change.

We highlight inequalities in sports sponsorship and act as a catalyst for changing funding and sponsorship decisions. We also shine a spotlight on those individuals & organisations who are playing a vital role by putting their money and their brand behind women’s sport.

THE SPORTS BRA PROJECT

The Sports Bra Project increases access to sports for women and girls by removing barriers to participation.

We provide sports bras to athletes who don’t have access to such a basic piece of equipment.
